How to sGTM: Tracking Plan Server on J+ Track?

This article includes: steps to create a server tracking plan and then export & import server tracking plan onto GTM

Updated over 2 years ago

In order to get started with the server tracking plan, you must

  1. Create a client from the “Client Management” section (if you don't already have it)

  2. And then create your tracking plan on the client side with all the events and variables you would like to include. For this simply click on “New tracking plan” and you will be able to select the option “Client” from this page and hit “Let’s go!

NOTE: The process of creating a client and the client tracking plan remains exactly the same and with the exact same parameters as before.

    Creation Tracking Plan Server:

  3. Now that you have your client and the tracking plan, let’s go again to “New tracking plan” and this time select “Server” on this page and hit “Let’s go!

  4. Once on the “Server” section, you will need to fill 2 mandatory fields:

    - Name: please give a descriptive name to your tracking plan server

    - Server container URL: copy paste the URL in this box. Please be careful while adding the URL here. And finally, click on “Create”.

Note: you can add multiple URLs if needed.

  5. Once the tracking plan server is created, from the interface click on “Create new server event”, and this will open a section where you can choose the type of tag you want to create:

  6. After choosing the type of tag, you can then fill in the correct fields. Make sure you give your tag a descriptive name.

These fields will be different for different types of tags, and each tag comes with a tool-tip to help you understand what information to provide for their fields.

IMPORTANT: This section also allows you to associate the trigger with either all client side events or specific event from the "Trigger configuration" field. Please note that if you need to create the trigger for more than one client event, you will need to create them one by one for each.

  7. Please note, that these Server tags are editable and deletable as and when you deem it necessary.

  8. The tracking plan server interface allows you to filter these tags either by “Type” or look for them by keyword “Search

Send events from Client container to Server container:

  9. Now that your tracking plan server is created, you will need to make sure that the events from the client container are correctly sent to the server container, and for this all you need to do is copy the URL from “Server container URL” and paste it on the tracking plan clients within the “Settings” section.

    - simply go back to the desired tracking plan client

    - click on “Settings

    - click on “Options” and from the dropdown check the “Server container link” box

    - it will open a field where you will be able to paste/enter the URL for the server container (make sure it is the exact same URL that you entered for the tracking plan container).

    - and click “Update

    Export & Import:

  10. Now you are all set to export and import in GTM both your tracking plan client (the process is exactly the same as before) and the tracking plan server. The process to export tracking plan server is similar to tracking plan client:

    - go back to your tracking plan server

    - click on the 3 dots on top right hand corner and choose the option “Export sGTM

    - this will download the JSON file locally

    - which you can then import onto GTM (we will see that in the next step)

  11. To import the downloaded JSON onto your GTM, simply go to GTM then:

    - select the “Account” that you require and choose “Server container

    - select the desired “Workspace” you want

    - and then click on “Admin”, in here choose the option “Import container

    - this will open a pop-up which will allow to choose and import the JSON for tracking plan server

    - and choose either one of the options “Overwrite” or “Merge” depending on your use case

    - once done you can go to the “Tags” tab to check the events you imported

Already have a Tracking Plan Client:

  12. Finally, if you have a client that already has a tracking plan client since before and would like to use sGTM, all you need to do is create a tracking plan server and copy paste the “Server container link” to your client tracking plan then re-export both tracking plans and re-import them into GTM.
